Out on Bond: Man Accused of DUI Crash that Killed Bicyclist Bobby Cann

A Park Ridge man accused of a nearby drunken driving accident last week that killed a bicyclist has been released on bond.

The family of Ryne San Hamel, 28, posted 10 percent—$10,000—of his $100,000 bail on Sunday, according to Cook County Jail officials.

He faces one count each of aggravated driving under the influence causing an accident or death, driving under the influence, reckless homicide, failure to stay in his lane, and reckless driving, Chicago Police said.

Authorities say Hamel was taken into custody after he struck a man, later identified as 26-year-old bicyclist Bobby Cann, while driving his Mercedes south along North Clybourn Avenue on Wednesday, June 29, near its intersection with North Larrabee Street. The Old Town crime scene is just east of Wicker Park's borders.

Cann was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He has pronounced dead around 7 p.m., police said.

Hamel reportedly failed field sobriety tests and refused to take a breathalyzer at the scene of the accident, according to a WGN News story, which cites prosecutors.

DNAinfo Chicago reports that they said Hamel had a blood-alcohol content of .127 at the time of the accident.

"According to his LinkedIn profile, San Hamel is a partner in a business called AllYouCanDrink.com, which is billed as the 'largest online directory for nightlife and entertainment anywhere on the planet,' one story says, later indicating that Hamel's social networking accounts had been disabled but "a MySpace profile that was last updated in 2010 shows a man chugging two beers at once."

Cann was reportedly an employee at Groupon Inc. on the Near North Side and was also a rider with Critical Mass, a bicycle advocacy group. That group rode in his memory on Friday evening, finishing the ride at the accident scene.
