Moreno to Cut Ribbon on Rehabbed Police Station

The new Central Warrants Unit will have an open house Oct. 9, repurposing the former 13th District police station.

Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) will join Sheriff Thomas J. Dart to officially cut the ribbon at Chicago’s new Cook County Sheriff’s Central Warrants Unit, the alderman announced.

The duo will host a family-friendly open house Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 6-8 p.m. It’s there they’ll do a ribbon cutting, have refreshments and even have a K9 unit demonstration.

The former 13th District police station at 937 N. Wood St. has been vacant since December when it was consolidated with the 12th District. While ideas like a dog park or community amphitheater were tossed around to replace the station, neighbors and Moreno said they wanted to keep a police presence in the area.

“When the announcement that the 13th district police station would be closed and consolidated with the 12th District Station, I vowed to fight for a police presence on the site,” Moreno said in a statement when the County Board of Commissioners passed the proposal.

And while roughly 100 officers will be located at the station, many pointed out the Central Warrants Unit is not similar to actual law enforcement, but instead deals with the apprehension of county fugitives.

Interested residents are welcome to attend the event to tour the rehabbed building and meet some of the sheriffs. Children will also be allowed to sit in a squad car.
