Waterway Officials Promote Boater Safety, Offer Free Classes

Chicago and U.S. officials are teaming up in honor of National Safe Boating Week.

Summertime temperatures surely have many residents beelining for North Avenue beach or Diversey Harbor. But Chicago officials, the U.S. Coast Guard and boating industry stakeholders are asking that they first take a moment to remember the fundamentals of boating safety including the need for life jackets, to ensure boats are safe and secure and to not drink and drive. This week marks National Safe Boating Week, which seeks to promote a safe and enjoyable summer on the city's waterways. A total of 651 boaters died on U.S. waterways in 2012, according to Coast Guard statistics. Among those, the 379 of the 459 people who drowned were not wearing a life jacket. Goose-Chasing Pup Plucked from Chicago River

Police rescued a dog Tuesday morning from a Lincoln Park section of the Chicago River, where it had taken a dip while chasing after a flock of geese.

A pup was plucked Tuesday morning from a nearby section of the Chicago River, where police said he accidentally plunged while chasing after a flock of geese. The German Shorthaired Pointer, Riley, wound up in the water beneath the Damen Avenue bridge around 8:50 a.m., Chicago Police Marine Officer Edmund Echevarria said. Despite Tuesday's 80-degree weather, the water remained at about 50 degrees, he said. "We got the call about a dog in the water near Damen ... and myself and my partner, (Marine Officer) Mark Walsh, jumped in the boat and headed up there," Echevarria said. Chicago Police to Add Extra Weekend Patrols

The Cook County Sheriff says more police will be patrolling Chicago this weekend for no other reason than to simply cut down on crime.

Extra patrols by Cook County Sheriff’s police will be taking place this weekend as part of an ongoing effort to keep streets safe and help prevent crime, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.  The saturation patrols will be county wide and run from 9 p.m. Saturday, May 4 through Sunday, May 5 and 9 p.m. Sunday, May 5 to 3 a.m. Monday, May 6. The extra patrols are funded through a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Blue Line Service Delayed After Body Found on Tracks

Service on the Blue Line is now delayed between Damen and Racine avenues Friday morning while police investigate a body on the tracks, CTA representatives say. Power was cut between the two Wicker Park stations at 10 a.m. Friday following the report. At 10:30 a.m., the CTA tweeted service was resuming with significant delays while police continue to investigate the reported crime scene. Service between O’Hare and Damen was running normally, as well as between Racine and Forest Park. The CTA said they’re encouraging commuters to ride the No. 7 Harrison or No. 20 Madison buses, as well as the Pink Line for service downtown and to through the West Side.
