Local Skate Scene Mourns Reggie Destin

Destin, who died last Saturday after a hit-and-run accident earlier in the month, was well known and well loved among Bucktown-Wicker Park skateboarders.

There's no doubt that Reginald "Reggie" Destin was a pillar of Chicago's skateboarding community. The 42-year-old, who called himself "the elder skatesman," was pronounced dead on Saturday after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run accident around 2 a.m. on Oct. 19 on the 1700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue. About 50 people gathered at Uprise, a skate shop at 1820 N. Milwaukee Ave., just hours after Destin's death. They then walked to the scene of the accident and created a memorial consisting of flowers, candles, and a white skateboard. Destin was well known throughout the city's skating community. Skateboarder Dies After Being Hit by Car This Month

A man who was hit by a reported drunken driver more than a week ago was pronounced dead over the weekend. Reginald "Reggie" Destin was well-loved in the skateboarding community, according to reports.

A middle-aged skateboarder who was struck by an alleged drunken driver in Wicker Park earlier this month has died.  Sun-Times Media reports that victim Reginald "Reggie" Destin called himself the "elder skatesman." The 42-year-old was hit around 2 a.m. Oct. 19 by a driver who fled the scene and was later arrested. At that time, Destin was listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. He was pronounced dead Oct. 27, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. The Sun-Times Media reports: "On Saturday, just hours after Destin’s death, dozens of people — most of them skateboarders and many of them in tears — gathered at Uprise, a skateboard shop near the scene of the accident. Skateboarder in Critical Condition After Hit by Car

A middle-aged man was hit by a car in Wicker Park while he was skateboarding early this morning.

A man is listed in critical condition after a driver hit him while he rode a skateboard in Wicker Park early this morning, according to reports. The 42-year-old victim was heading southbound around 2 a.m. in the bike lane of the 1700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue when he was struck from behind by a Dodge Neon, according to the Sun-Times Media. The driver fled the scene but was pulled over shortly afterward and taken into custody, according to the report. The story says: "Officers on patrol heard a crash and went to the scene, where they found the victim lying on the ground, News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said." The victim was being treated at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. He remained in critical condition around noon …
